The use of genetic resistance of plants to protect them against pests and diseases has been the first method of combating crop parasites. Since ancient times, varieties with the best agronomic and commercial characteristics, capable of resisting pests and diseases, have been selected. 



HOW DOES THE IMMUNE SYSTEM OF PLANTS WORK?


Plants have a defense system based on antibodies similar to that which exists in animals.

ALARM SIGNAL

This surveillance system is made up of a receptor that perceives a small part of the pathogen called an elicitor. When the plant perceives it, it emits an alarm signal that generates defense reactions, activating the plant's immune system. (SAR)



IN STRESS SITUATIONS THE IMMUNE SYSTEM OF THE PLANT DECAYS.


Sometimes the natural defense system of plants cannot control external attacks on its own. The plants then need an extra contribution to activate their immune system. Within these external attacks we can consider:

  • Plant stress
  • Excessive use of synthetic agrochemicals.
  • Changes in temperature and/or humidity.
  • Climatological factors.


HOW CAN WE HELP THE DEFENSE OF PLANTS?


Plants' natural defenses can be included or activated by applying external elicitors on the leaf surface or in the soil. These from botanical extracts are composed of carbohydrates, proteins and small molecules. They are capable of acting as defense inducers. 

External elicitors can also cause the production, increase and storage of antibodies with antimicrobial activity, preparing the plant to combat pathogenic fungi and bacteria. Phytofortifiers composed of plant extracts take advantage of the defense mechanisms of plants to contribute to the prevention of fungi and diseases. They do not produce resistance, do not present toxicity against humans or animals and are not harmful to the environment.
